Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park

Each year, the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park attracts many visitors. The clear water and coral reefs below the surface provide an outstanding atmosphere for both scuba divers and snorkelers. You can even enjoy close sightings of the nearby sea lion colony when you kayak in the area. While your vacationing in Los Cabos, this national park makes for a great day trip!

Park Location

Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is located just 60 miles north of Baja's tourism epicenter, Los Cabos. The park, located on the East Cape region of Baja California Sur, stretches 5 miles from the northernmost tip, Pulmo Point to the southernmost tip, Los Frailes. Surrounded by the undeveloped desert and a stunning mountain range, the beaches of Cabo Pulmo give way to a shallow bay that cradles one of three living reefs, the only hard coral reef in North America.

The Coral Reef

The Cabo Pulmo Reef is among the oldest in the American Pacific at approximately 20,000 years old. It has 8 fingers of hard coral reef, providing a safe haven for many of the 800 species of marine animals found throughout the Sea of Cortez. The coral reef has the widest coralline cover in the Gulf of California. A total of 226 reef species, of the 875 species listed for the Gulf area, have been observed in the park, along with a total of 154 marine invertebrate species. Aside from the species that depend directly on the reef, others visit the park on a temporary basis, making use of it to find food, reproduce or migrate. Several turtle species periodically visit the shores to reproduce or to look for food. Near the coast, you will also find marine mammals, including sea lions, several types of dolphins and several types of whales.

The best time to visit the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is during the Los Cabos Summer Dive Fiesta! Throughout August, various activities take place around the coastline to appeal to scuba divers of varying abilities. Many of the best events take place as evening approaches, including beach parties and other gatherings, especially around the park. Contact Lifestyle Villas about reserving one of our luxury villa rentals in Los Cabos this August!
