8 of the BEST Travel Tips You'll Find

"We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us." - Anonymous

Being in a new place can be both intimidating and invigorating at the same time. Whether you're coming to see us in beautiful Los Cabos or traveling to some other new destination, adventure awaits you. Lifestyle Villas has put together a list of travel tips that guarantee you'll get the most out of your vacation experience:

1. Pack Light.

Packing light doesn't mean you have to go without. Create a list of the items you'll need for the trip and stick to it. Don't wait until the last minute to pack or your liable to over pack. Mix and match your clothing items so you can coordinate more outfits with fewer clothes. Shoes typically take up a lot of space, so try to limit yourself to two pairs. You don't want to be trucking around with more luggage than you can carry and you're going to need room to bring new items back with you.

2. Take Advantage of Technology.

Your phone can do a lot of things to make your trip run smoothly. Before you leave, email yourself all of your confirmations for flights, lodging, attractions, etc. Use free messaging apps to check in back home so you don't have to pay outrageous international fees. Download audio books, some new music, and games to keep you busy on long flights or drives.

3. Wake Up Early.

How often do you get to go on vacation to a new place? Take advantage of the unique opportunity and don't sleep the day away. You can fit more stuff in if you wake up early and hit the attractions before everyone else does. It's also usually easier to interact with the locals in the mornings - you'll be able to get a local perspective on what you need to experience while you're there.

4. Take Tons of Photos.

You may only have this opportunity once in your lifetime, so make sure you document these memories with pictures. Not only will you have them to cherish, but all your family and friends back home are going to want to see them when you get back. Don't worry about looking like a tourist. Great photos are the ultimate souvenir - they don't cost a thing, are easy to share with others and don't take up space in your luggage. Just remember that once you get your shot, take a step back and enjoy the view too!

5. Go Off the Beaten Path.

Finding souvenirs that were actually made where you're vacationing is becoming harder and harder. Almost every little trinket is made in China these days. Get away from the tourist areas and look for unusual items in supermarkets, hardware stores, stationary shops, etc. Not only will the merchandise have unique character, it will be stuff that the locals really use.

6. Splurge a Little.

While traveling on a budget is great, don't deny yourself everything. Again, you may never have this opportunity again, so splurge a little and stay in a nice hotel, eat at a fancy restaurant or have a great night out on the town. It's nice and healthy to go just a little over budget occasionally.

7. Eat Local Food.

Do you think you already know what Mexican food tastes like? If you never been out of the United States, you probably don't! Taste a bit of everything when you travel. If you're traveling with others, order different things off the menu and let each other try them. Ask the locals for recommendations on what the best menu options are and be sure to try the street food from vendors. Don't be scared to try new foods - you may surprise yourself and find a new favorite dish!

8. Be Impulsive.

While it's good to have a few things planned out that you want to do while on vacation, don't plan too much. It's also fun to wander into the unknown. Don't be afraid to get lost on purpose, you never know what you might find. Be impulsive and say yes when someone invites you to try something new. It's these unexpected and unplanned situations that add spice to your travels and always turn into the best stories later. Accept the kindness of strangers when you travel - but be smart and stay safe at the same time. Break out of your comfort zone - what have you got to lose.

5 Tips for Packing Your Carry-On Bag

You may think traveling is stressful, but it doesn't have to be! There are things you can do to make both packing and getting through the airport easier. If you're going to be gone for a week or less, you can save both time and money by only packing a carry-on. The Travel Channel has a few great carry-on packing tips in this video - and Lifestyle Villas has added a few more of our own!

How to Pack a Carry-On Bag

Tip #1 - Pick the Right Bag

While you might think that giant rolling sparkly bag would go great with your favorite travel outfit, the airlines might not agree. Before you go out and buy the first bag you like, check with your airline to make sure your bag fits the dimension requirements. You don't want to end up having to pay for a checked bag at the airport because your carry-on is too large.

Tip #2 - Make a Packing List

Just like when going to the grocery store, it's important to have a list for two main reasons: 1. So you don't pack to much and 2. So you don't forget anything. Make a list of the things you absolutely need to take with you. Pay special attention to the word "need" in that last sentence. Don't take that cute new pair of heels you just bought just because. Make sure you take practical things that you know you will use - your carry-on space is limited.

Tip #3 - Wear Your Heaviest & Largest Items

To free up some room in your bag, you should wear your heaviest and largest items. If you are taking boots, tennis shoes and flipflop with you, then you'll want to wear your boots as they would take up the most room in a bag. Same goes for a hoodie or coat - even it's warm where you are and cold in your destination, go ahead and put it on to save room. You can always take it off once you get on the plane if you get too warm.

Tip #4 - Roll Your Clothes

Rather than folding your clothes, try rolling them. Tightly rolled clothes take up less space than folded ones do. Plus, they're less likely to get winkles and fold creases this way. Another great way to save space in your bag is to stuff socks and other small items inside your shoes. Make the most of the space that you have by filling in any and all open spaces, no matter how small.

Tip #5 - Downsize Everything

Less is more when it comes to packing. We mentioned earlier when you were making your list to only bring the essentials. Now let's see if we can reduce the amount of essentials you need. You can easily wear a pair of pants more than once, unless you plan on going mudding of course. Stick to one color scheme if you can so you don't have to worry about bringing something to match with crazy colored clothing. In addition to downsizing your clothes, downsize your liquids, make-up etc. Most airlines have restrictions on the amount of liquid you can bring on board, limiting each item to 3 oz.

It's easy to pack light when you're headed on a Los Cabos vacation. All you need is your bathing suit, sunglasses and flip-flops! Okay, so you may need a few more items than that, but with these tips, packing your carry-on should be a breeze. See you soon in one of our beachfront villas in Los Cabos, Mexico!
