Come to Mexico for the Baja 500!

The Annual Baja 500 will take place June 1-5, 2016 in Ensenada, Baja California Sur, Mexico. This weekend-long desert racing event is something you'll definitely want to be a part of, and while you're here, you can check out all the beauty of the Baja California Sur area, like sunny Los Cabos! Lifestyle Villas is here to help you plan the perfect vacation around one of the most iconic off-road races on the planet!

About Baja 500

The Baja 500 race began in 1969. In 1974, Mexican government officials asked SCORE International to take over the event. The race is approximately 500 miles and is one of the most grueling races in off-road racing history. Many off-road racers from around the world come to compete in this iconic race, just for the chance to say they've participated. For the lucky few, they can add a win to their record. For more information on this exciting event, be sure to check out the SCORE Baja 500 Ultimate Fan Guide!

Must Attend Events
  • SCORE Contingency: In Ensenada, race vehicles and teams take over several blocks of one of the main boulevards. Fans are able to see racers and their vehicles up-close. Most teams pass out free swag and sign autographs. Make sure to get there early though, as the crowds are huge!
  • Monster Energy Papas & Beer Street Party: The Monster Street Party happens before the race and is a great way to see teams and celebrities. Here you can dance, drink and enjoy local food with other fans and the race teams.
  • Baja 500 Race Day: While it's difficult to watch a 500-mile race in person, one of the best spots to be is at the start/finish line area. The racers will also drive through town prior to hitting the desert track, so there are other popular spots you can watch them from as well.
  • Many local restaurants and hot-spots are filled with fans in a festive mood to celebrate the race!

Celebrating Semana Santa in Mexico

Semana Santa is Mexico's second most important holiday season, after Christmas. It runs from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. While religious celebrations are at the forefront, many Mexicans use this holiday week to go on vacation, head to beaches and see the tourist attractions. Most schools actually have two weeks of vacation, the week of Semana Santa and the following week. Lifestyle Villas wants to help you understand how we celebrate Easter in Mexico. Let's take a look at what this holiday is all about and how it's celebrated today.

What is Semana Santa?

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, celebrates the Christian holiday of Easter. The country of Mexico is nearly 90% Catholic, so this religious holiday takes on a special meaning that the entire community participates in. Mass is held on Friday and Easter Sunday. Mexico's Holy Week traditions are mostly based on those from Spain, brought over with the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire.

Semana Santa Traditions

While all of Mexico celebrates the holiday, certain cities are better known for their celebrations. These cities often provide re-enactments of the events leading up to Christ's crucifixion on the cross. Each community celebrates the holiday in their own way. However, popular activities throughout the country include the breaking of cascarones, or colored egg shells filled with confetti, over friends and family. Families take the opportunity to be together during this time, especially at Mass on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. In many cities, important religious images from the church will be displayed, traditional altars are decorated at home and in the streets. Flower decorations and palm crosses can be found everywhere during this holiday.

Daily Activities During Semana Santa

Palm Sunday

Semana Santa begins on Palm Sunday, when many join in a special mass that includes the blessing of palm fronds or crosses and other figures that have been fashioned from palms. A large procession commemorating Jesus' arrival to Jerusalem often precedes the mass. Many of the palms are later burned to create ashes to be used on Ash Wednesday the following year.

Vespers Service

On Wednesday during Holy Week, some churches celebrate a late-afternoon vespers service called "los matines de las tinieblas," in which the disciples' abandonment of Jesus is recalled. A candelabra set with 15 candles illuminates the altar. One candle is extinguished after the singing of each song until only the center one is left, representing the Lord Jesus.

Easter Observances Begin

The commemoration of Easter begins on Thursday. In cathedrals throughout the country, bishops celebrate special masses during which the Chrism, a sacred oil used in the sacraments, is consecrated. That evening, many churches hold some type of re-enactment of the Last Supper. On this day during mass, the customary exchange of greetings of peace is omitted to represent Judas' betrayal. It's also customary to silence the church bells during the three key days of the Easter holiday.

Good Friday

Many towns and villages remember the trial and crucifixion through a Passion Play. It may be an all day event involving a cast of hundreds. In other areas, there may be some type of solemn procession. In addition, the Virgin Mary's pain and suffering may be recalled with the display of an Altar de Dolores, an Altar of Sorrows.

Holy Saturday

The greatest of holy vigils is celebrated on the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. It often includes a solemn evening mass during which each person receiving communion lights a candle at the altar, holding it throughout the remainder of the ceremony. After mass, participants gather outside for the burning of Los Judas. These large papier mache effigies, usually painted in eye-popping colors, represent Judas Iscariot and other forces of evil. These figures are hung up in the street or the central town plaza. Once the public has gathered, they are ignited in quick succession, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

Easter Sunday

For Christian churches, this is unquestionably the most important day of the year. All Catholics are expected to attend mass and take Holy Communion, so every church throughout Mexico will be packed on this day. It's a unique time for spiritual renewal. The church bells will once again ring on this day. Following the services, you will see festive crowds bustling about every town plaza. Street vendors hawking tacos, ice cream and other snacks will also be found. There will be balloons and toys, and perhaps even mechanical rides for children to enjoy.

While it's too late to make Easter reservations this year, it's never too early to start planning for summer or even next year's important holidays! Whale Watching Season in Los Cabos

Each year in late fall or early winter, hundreds of whales from the frigid waters of the Arctic migrate to the warm, calm waters surrounding the Baja Peninsula. Ideal climate, shallow waters, salinity and abundant marine life make the bays and lagoons north of Los Cabos the perfect place for whales to raise their young. From December to March, there's no better place to go whale watching than Los Cabos!

The Sea of Cortez

Whale watching in Cabo San Lucas is very unique because the city sits at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, where the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meets. While the Pacific Ocean is the highway the whales take to travel from their home in Alaska to their home in Mexico, the Sea of Cortez is a very real whale sanctuary. The Sea of Cortez is still one of the most biologically intact seas in the world. While the population of Humpback and Gray whales explodes from December to March, there are some species that can be seen in Cabo all throughout the year. In fact, approximately 75% of all cetacean (whale and dolphin species) can be found in the Sea of Cortez, making it fairly easy to see a whale while you're vacationing in Los Cabos.

Types of Whales

You can expect to see several different types of whales in Los Cabos during the late winter and early spring months. Let's take a look at a few of these amazing creatures:

Blue Whales - At 30 meters in length and 180 tons or more in weight, blue whales are thought to be the largest and heaviest animals ever to live on Earth. Their skin is a beautiful gray-blue color, often with a mottling of light spots.

Gray Whales - The gray whale is a medium-sized baleen whale, with a beautiful gray coloration that has white spots and patches. It reaches a length of 14.9 meters, a weight of 36 tons, and lives between 55 and 70 years.

Humpback Whales - Humpback whales are medium-sized baleen whales with a thick blubber layer, making them clumsier in appearance than some of their more streamlined relatives. The humpback has a distinctive body shape, with long pectoral fins and a knobbly head. Its majestic tail and variety of spectacular behaviors make this whale a favorite of whale watchers.

Sperm Whales - The sperm whale, or cachalot, is the largest of the toothed whales and the largest toothed predator. They can grow to about 60 feet in length. They have dark, wrinkled skin, blocky heads and stout bodies.

Fin Whales - The fin whale, also called the finback whale, razorback or common rorqual, is the second-largest animal in the world. Its sleek appearance got it the nickname "greyhound of the sea." They are the only animal known to be asymmetrically-colored, as they have a white patch on their lower jaw on their right side, but not their left.

Killer Whales - Known by their beautiful black and white coloration, killer whales have an unmistakable appearance. Also referred to as orca whales or orcas, killer whales are toothed whales who gather in family-oriented pods of 10-50 whales.

Whales aren't the only marine life you'll be able to view this time of year - you can expect to see various dolphins, including Common, Pacific White Sided and Bottlenose, as well!

Whale Watching Tours

Whale watching is Los Cabos' most popular activity!  The exciting variety and abundance of cetacean make Los Cabos one of the best places on earth to view these beautiful animals. At Lifestyle Villas, we offer a variety of whale watching tours for you to choose from:

AEROCALAFIA - Join us at Magdalena Bay to watch the gray whale, a gentle giant that measures 12-16 meters and weighs from 20-35 tons! The tour offers the opportunity to observe these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.

RISSALENA - The Rissalena is a newly commissioned, custom designed, 37-foot power catamaran. Reserve a whale watching, sightseeing adventure with your friends, associates or family of up to 24 people for a one-of-a-kind cruise experience.

ZIG ZAG PRIVATE CHARTER - Zig Zag, a 43-foot fountain pajot catamaran, is extremely stable and comfortable as she glides through the water at 5-8 miles an hour. Enjoy the tour from the roomy aft seating area or the large open bow.

OCEAN RIDERS - Ocean Riders' tours have become one of the most popular ways to see whales in Los Cabos. The performance of their boats will let you explore more territory than any other boat in town, guaranteeing whale sightings from the comfort of your seat.

CABO ADVENTURES - Conducted on new all-weather inflatable speed boats to ensure a safe and comfortable ride, Cabo Adventures whale watching tours are guided by exceptionally talented marine mammal behavior experts who are passionate about protecting wildlife and the environment.
